1st Grade Cut-outs and Collages

1st graders practiced their cutting skills while creating unique, beautiful collages. We read the children’s book, Henri Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, and they understood that the artist had created his famous cut-outs by drawing shapes using his scissors.

Students cut and arranged simple shapes to create animals, people and abstract compositions. After cutting paper snowflakes for the winter concert, they used the skills and understanding they gained through that activity to create cut-outs and collages by folding construction paper, cutting out shapes, and then opening the paper to see what they had created.
